Emerald care and filled fractures

Updated · SOUHAIT GEMS editorial

An emerald with a conceptual fracture line is paired with gentle cleaning and crossed-out steam symbols.
Filled fractures can affect care. This schematic is not a diagnostic image of an emerald or a way to identify filling from a photograph.

Emerald has a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, yet it needs more care than ruby or sapphire. Existing fractures and materials used to fill them can affect handling.

Choose gentle cleaning

Warm soapy water and gentle brushing are the safest approach described by GIA. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning. Vibration may weaken a fractured stone, while heat can affect filling materials.

Avoid heat and chemical exposure

Heat can extend fractures. Oils, resins and polymers used in clarity enhancement can change or deteriorate with exposure to light or chemicals. Tell your jeweler about any known filling before resizing or repair.

Before buying

Request treatment information and any report for the specific emerald. Ask whether special care is required and whether the filling may need attention later. Evaluate the stone with its treatment disclosed rather than treating clarity alone as a measure of quality.
